How we work

The Sustainability Report

Transparency towards our stakeholders is a fundamental principle that guides our Group in all its activities. This desire for transparency also translates into our decision to draft an annual, voluntary, Sustainability Report for the Group. Published for the first time in 2015, the document reports each year on the Company’s sustainability journey, reflecting its commitment across the globe through its main businesses.

Since its very first edition, we have drafted the Sustainability Report in compliance with GRI Standards, defined by the GRI - Global Reporting Initiative, which are currently the most widely used and internationally recognized standard for non-financial reporting, and we subject it to limited review by an independent third party.

Analysing the impacts of our activities through the lens of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, we have identified the four top-priority Objectives for Sustainable Development for us to concentrate on over the coming years: Goal 5 - Gender Equality, Goal 8 - Decent Work and Economic Growth, Goal 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal 13 – Climate Action.

To these we have added “Goal Zero”, which we created to spread the message of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals towards our Group’s main stakeholders.

GOAL 5
  • Gap Free, our commitment to promoting equity and recognizing the value of diversity is encapsulated in our Diversity & Inclusion Manifesto
  • We achieved first-level of EDGE certification (ASSESS, level 1 out of 3) for Gender Equality in Italy
  • We are certified Top Employers in Italy
GOAL 8
  • We renewed our Code of Ethics to translate the Group’s four values into principles and rules of behaviour for all our stakeholders
  • A Cup of Learning continues, the professional training programme for young people in vulnerable groups that since 2017 has given employment opportunities to over 380 people in 16 countries
  • We obtained Gold certification by EcoVadis, one of the most highly-respected accreditations in international supplier sustainability ratings.
GOAL 12
  • The Sustainable Packaging Roadmap is on track: to date, 66% of our Group’s packaging is already recyclable
  • Over 89% of the waste we produced was recovered and recycled
  • 97% of vegetable waste from coffee processing in Italian plants was converted into fertilizers
GOAL 13
  • We produce 98% of our coffee with renewable electricity
  • We are at -16% CO2eq emissions for processed coffee compared to 2021
  • We have an integrated management system certified ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 as a Group, in order to improve the management of the Health and Safety of our employees and our environmental impacts

Our Foundation

With the formation of the Lavazza Foundation in 2004, we began our commitment to social, environmental and economic sustainability, with a special focus on the coffee-producing communities to which we dedicated 33 measurable projects in 2022, benefiting over 180,000 coffee growers in 20 countries across three continents. These programmes, implemented with the collaboration of local community players, have the aim of improving coffee yield and quality, at the same time as promoting both entrepreneurship among growers and improvements in their living standards, and of fostering gender parity and the involvement of the new generations.
